The San Francisco-based bank, which is the largest bank in Minnesota and has 21,000 employees in the state, is also one of the country's biggest subprime lenders.

Wells Fargo isn't drawing the same scrutiny as many smaller subprime lenders because there's no question that the big bank can handle whatever damage mortgage defaults inflict on its loan portfolio. But that doesn't mean that Wells Fargo is immune to the crisis or that its profits won't suffer if the subprime crisis leads to a broader slowdown in the housing market.
