High Dividend Stocks: An Alternative to Fixed-Income Investing

Excerpt:

These stocks may not outperform gold in a runaway inflationary scenario. However, if central banks miraculously restore the economy without causing inflation, gold will dive, but these stocks should hold up well, inflation or not.

Comment: I personally could not invest in a tobacco company but there are some others that interest me: the pharmaceutical companies mentioned and CenturyLink

  1. I personally couldn't care less where I invest, from a "moral" or "green" point of view. But, I don't have any problems with people who chose to invest or not invest because of these types of issues. If it's not an IPO, you're not giving your money to the company anyway. Anyway, I like your site, even though I disagree with you on this one little topic.

  2. JP, ok, now I'm having a little fun with you, but am actually being serious at the same time. You couldn't invest in a tobacco company but could invest in a pharmaceutical??? I think there are many, many, many people who are messed up or dead because of legal drugs.

  3. Dear Anonymous,

Every investor has to make his own investment decisions. I am reading the classical Intelligent Investor: The Definitive Book on Value Investing. A Book of Practical Counsel

I have a giant spreadsheet with almost 600 stocks that I am analyzing. I favor dividend paying ones. Also I am going for diversification by industry and by company.

I don't think I will invest in more than 30 stocks total. I am avoiding bank stocks at this time. Pharmaceuticals? Yes.

  4. JP, I think you missed my point. (or maybe I was the one who missed the point!) Perhaps I misunderstood you. I took your comment to mean that you wouldn't invest in a tobacco company because of moral/ethical reasons. But maybe you actually meant that you wouldn't invest in a tobacco company because of financial reasons because tobacco use is declining all the time.............Anyway, I always wonder about these ads on radio that claim to be "moral, upstanding Christian" funds and make a big deal out of how they don't invest in porn or tobacco or liquor, etc. To me, that seems more like a marketing gimmick than anything else. Again, unless it's an IPO, you're not even giving your money to the company anyway..................

Good idea about banks. I'm staying away from them as well.
