Bordering on the irrational

Roland Martin: Conservatives' hatred of McCain makes no sense

Excerpt:

During a debate Tuesday on CNN's "The Situation Room," conservative radio talk show host Glenn Beck said that the Republican Party has lost its soul, and McCain is indicative of that problem. He even said that if Sen. Hillary Clinton is the nominee, he will ignore McCain and cast a ballot for her.

Now, how silly is that?

Looking at the exit polls from Super Tuesday, McCain did well in some states with conservative voters, but he continues to run strong among moderates and independents. He clearly has a lot of work to do to shore up this important constituent in the party.

Let's be clear -- conservatives don't like McCain. But with conservatives one seat away from having a majority on the Supreme Court and the next president having the power to name up to three justices, do you actually think the folks who've fought two generations to re-take the Court actually want to see three Clinton jurists?

This, folks, is bordering on the irrational.

California Delegate Shocker

Excerpt:

According to my calculations and the 97% of vote has come in so far, Mitt Romney has only won 6 out of California’s 173 delegates. How is this possible if Romney has come within 8% of beating McCain? Many commenters have assumed that California allocates delegates by simple proportionally. Since John McCain has won 42% and Romney 34% of the statewide vote, shouldn’t they get 42% and 34% of the delegates, respectively? Well, in a word, no. Let me explain.

California has 173 total delegates. Here’s how that number is broken down.

  1. 11 delegates go to the statewide winner (10 at-large base, 1 bonus)
  2. 3 delegates go to the winner of each Congressional district (CA has 53 districts, 159 delegates total)
  3. 3 are unpledged delegates that belong to the state RNC members (who almost always vote for the statewide winner at the convention)

Comment: Time for the Republicans to rally around McCain!
