If you’re a Gmail user, you can now set up your account to use Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) with your favorite e-mail program. Unlike the older POP mail system, which typically confines message downloads to the computer or the device you are working on, IMAP is server-based so your mailbox has all the current messages no matter where you use it — on a computer, Web browser or mobile device. Using IMAP with Gmail is free, and instructions on setting it up with different mail programs are at http://preview.tinyurl.com/yofbl9.
