Jets: "bet their future on a Hail Mary pass"

Is Brett a Bad Bet for the Jets?

Excerpt:

And here's CBS's Phil Simms, former New York Giants quarterback and Super Bowl winner: "This is bigger than when Joe Montana left the Forty-Niners to go to Kansas City in 1993."

It would be if Brett Favre were as good as Joe Montana. Mr. Montana won four Super Bowls and was arguably the greatest quarterback in football history; Mr. Favre has won just one Super Bowl and is probably the most overrated, or at the very least overhyped, quarterback in the modern NFL.

Let's strip the Brett-to-the-Jets deal of the illusions the media has wrapped it in. What we have is a 4-12 team that has signed a 38-year-old quarterback who, though he made something of a comeback last season, hasn't otherwise finished in the top five of the league's passers since 2001. (In 2006 he was ranked 25th; in 2005, 31st.).

Comment: The Opinion Journal would not be a Brett Favre fan! I am. I can't wait to see what Brett can do in the AFC East.

  1. There must not be a lot of Jet Favre fans at your site, JP. We're back to just you and me making posts. I guess you have to post some really weird article - something akin to bifurcated uniforms - to actually get people make posts.

  2. I'm not sure I understand your constant complaining about lack of comments here, anon. I guess if you want active discussion, maybe you should look elsewhere? Like I've said before - I'm here most every day, I just don't post much on the internet. Sorry if that offends you.

I've been a Packers fan my whole life, although I don't remember much if at all before the Brett Favre era. So cheering for a team without him at all is a strange thing to look forward to. And while I don't think I'm as disappoined as I would have expected with him playing for another team, I am disappointed with the way he's conducted himself during this whole deal.

So what do you think it is that makes stars like Favre, Michael Jordan, etc "un-retire?" I know I don't understand it.

  3. I love watching the Pack. May sound funny because I live in Minneapolis, but I've never been a Vikings fan. We were in Denver for 9 years ... am still a Bronco fan.

About Brett ... he is a terrific athlete and competitor. I'm glad he is playing somewhere.

  4. Tobin, are you a wallflower? When you go to a party do you go off in a corner and hope no one notices you or talks to you? Come on people. Some of you need to break out of your shells and not be so shy! Tobin, I'm sure you're a very neat guy who actually has interesting things to say. You and everyone else here shouldn't be so scared to talk. I'm at least #130 lbs. overweight (not quite The Learning Channel's "Half Ton Man," but working on it!), generally unattractive, and not very bright, but even I have fun at parties! Tobin, if I can do it, you can too!

But back to Jet Favre, I look forward to seeing what he can do with his new team.

  5. I'm not an insider on the NBA, but isn't it generally acknowledged that Jordan retired the first time under great pressure because of a gambling problem? Wasn't the thinking that it might hurt his image and it would be better to go away quietly?

Favre probably just couldn't go down in history as having his very last pass be an interception. If they had won that game they may have gone on to win the Superbowl and he could have gone out on top. I don't blame the guy for wanting to give it another try.

  6. Anon - it's usually a time factor. But thanks for your concern.

  7. News today is that Brett's complaining about his arm already, and he's yet to be hit. It may be that the Packers snagged a lot for nothing from the Jets here.

Personally, I see a guy about my age with a bundle of cash, two good knees, and a family....why risk all of it for a few more TDs?

And Jordan? I was told that his going into baseball had something to do with his father's death, but I've also seen the gambling stories. I dunno.
