Al Gore: hyperbole alert!
The Climate for Change
Excerpts:
THE inspiring and transformative choice by the American people to elect Barack Obama as our 44th president lays the foundation for another fateful choice that he — and we — must make this January to begin an emergency rescue of human civilization from the imminent and rapidly growing threat posed by the climate crisis.
The electrifying redemption of America’s revolutionary declaration that all human beings are born equal sets the stage for the renewal of United States leadership in a world that desperately needs to protect its primary endowment: the integrity and livability of the planet.
The world authority on the climate crisis, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, after 20 years of detailed study and four unanimous reports, now says that the evidence is “unequivocal.” To those who are still tempted to dismiss the increasingly urgent alarms from scientists around the world, ignore the melting of the north polar ice cap and all of the other apocalyptic warnings from the planet itself, and who roll their eyes at the very mention of this existential threat to the future of the human species, please wake up. Our children and grandchildren need you to hear and recognize the truth of our situation, before it is too late.
...
Here’s what we can do — now: we can make an immediate and large strategic investment to put people to work replacing 19th-century energy technologies that depend on dangerous and expensive carbon-based fuels with 21st-century technologies that use fuel that is free forever: the sun, the wind and the natural heat of the earth.

I liked the part about us being "born equal." Seems that Mr. Gore needs a little reminder on what the Declaration actually says. I nominate Alan Keyes to inform him!
ReplyDeleteObama, in his first declaration as the president to be (as far as I know), said he was thinking of putting more restrictions on drilling. That is no surprise at all. I wondered how long these good gas prices would last.
ReplyDelete2 questions for JP, bb, or anyone else:
ReplyDeleteDo you think the DOW will hit 6,000 by the end of this year as some are predicting?
And speaking of global warming confusion, do you think GM will hit less than 10 cents by the end of the year as others are predicting. That is radical!! This is GM! But unfortunately I don't see either scenario as out of the question.
Dow: No bottom in sight :(
ReplyDeleteGM: I heard that it get near to zero! (Drudge report)
GM shares down 30 percent after broker downgrades
Barclays' analyst Brian Johnson downgraded GM to "underweight" from "equal weight." Deutsche Bank also cut GM to "sell" from "hold," and saw an equity value of $0 for the stock, according to a report on theflyonthewall.com. Reuters could not immediately verify the report.
"While further government assistance would decrease the likelihood of a GM bankruptcy, we believe any government assistance would likely significantly dilute GM's equity," Barclays' Johnson wrote in a note to clients.
Johnson cut his price target on the stock to $1 from $4.
"Of the four broad options for government assistance for GM, we believe that political pressure to protect taxpayers may lead to a solution similar to the 1979 Chrysler bailout, which was accompanied by concessions from debt holders, labor, suppliers and management," Johnson said.
"In any scenario, we see little value for current equity," he added.
Dow 6000: likely. Boomers are moving to retire.
ReplyDeleteGM to a dime; unlikely. They can unload too much by going chapter 11, including their UAW contracts and such that are killing them. It'll bottom out before that.
UAW bankruptcy; extremely likely, as they've taken over most of the pension/medical obligations for GM retirees.
Likelihood that you and I will be on the hook for GM pensions; 90% or more.
Am I a prophet? No. :^) Just watching the signs I see.
"GM to a dime; unlikely. They can unload too much by going chapter 11, including their UAW contracts and such that are killing them. It'll bottom out before that.
ReplyDeleteIt will be interesting, and sad, to watch and see if you're correct or not. I predict it'll hit the $2 range on Tuesday. It hit the low $3's on Monday.
Yep, right on schedule GM is now in the 2's.
ReplyDeleteI will of course argue vociferously that I was right if GM's stock bottoms out at 11 cents. :^)
ReplyDeleteAnd whatever happens, I hope it doesn't kill off the Acadia and the Suburban. Families like mine need real cars to haul the chilluns.
