The "i before e except after c" rule

Exceptions to the rule 'I before E except after C'

Comment: Instructor in my business writing class (SkillPath) provided this link.

Conclusion: "Instead of trying to defend the 'rule' or 'guideline', "'i' before 'e' except after 'c'", why don't we all just agree that it is dumb and useless, and be content just to laugh at it?"

  1. What I learned in school 25 years or so ago was "I before E, except after C, or when sounded as A as in neighbor or weigh. Exceptions: Neither leizured foreigner seized their weird heights."

Looking at that link, there are a few more exceptions than that. But I don't recall ever needing to spell "heifer." :)

I don't think I have ever needed to spell "heifer"!
