Depraved Sinner or Depressed Psycho?

Killer co-pilot sought treatment for problems with his VISION: Haunting selfie emerges of Andreas Lubitz as it emerges he was suffering from 'serious psychosomatic illness'

They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice [evil-mindedness] (NKJV) (Romans 1:29) (NIV)
Comment: Source of "heinous act" quote is WND. Unthinkable acts like the Germanwings Flight 9525 mass murder cause one to wonder about the nature of evil. Some atheists claim that religion is evil, but as Frank Turek notes "evil [that] the civilized world abhor(s) doesn't disprove God—it disproves atheism." The phrase "evil-mindedness" above is a translation of the hapax legomena (meaning: "occurs only once in the New Testament") κακοήθεια. κακοήθεια means "malignant subtlety, malicious craftiness". As our society degrades we seem to be seeing malicious inventions of killing in greater degrees of magnificent wickedness. 10 years ago one could not imagine the IPhone. And 10 years ago one could not imagine the wicked act of March 24th. One the horizon will be greater technological advancements ... and greater evil acts and wicked actors. Albert Mohler commented on this evil in a recent briefing:
there is now evidence that there was an intentionality behind this that goes beyond our moral imagination. Or that’s at least what the international media are now saying, that it goes beyond our moral imagination. Of course that’s not exactly true; this doesn’t go beyond our imagination. It just enters into the realm of moral horror

Comment: not sin but a sickness

The exact nature of his disorder remains unknown,

  2. WSJ: Germanwings 9525 and the Future of Flight Safety:

Perverts among us believe their own deaths aren’t enough; they have to take some innocents with them. An Adam Lanza can end up working for an airline—and perhaps did. His name was Andreas Lubitz.

    ...
Murder-suicide by airline pilot looms large as other accidents become rarer, but it is not unknown. When a Japan Airlines pilot crashed his DC-8 into Tokyo Bay in 1982, nobody thought to treat depressed pilots as an urgent safety challenge. Amateur pilots and military pilots have committed suicide by plane too, including an Air Force A-10 pilot who crashed into a Colorado mountain in 1997.

  3. Sections of Ecclesiastes 9 seem to speak generally about this heinous crime:

Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead (vs 3) ....

one sinner destroys much good (vs 18)
    ...

For man also does not know his time:
Like fish taken in a cruel net,
Like birds caught in a snare,
So the sons of men are snared in an evil time,
When it falls suddenly upon them. (vs 12)

  4. The Mind of Those Who Kill, and Kill Themselves:

Before Adam Lanza, 20, the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter, killed 20 children, six adults and himself in 2012, he wrote in an online forum, “Just look at how many fans you can find for all different types of mass murderers.”

Robert Hawkins, 19, who committed suicide after killing eight people at a shopping mall in Omaha in 2007, left a note saying “I’m gonna be famous,” punctuating the sentence with an expletive.

And Dylan Klebold, 17, of Columbine High School fame, bragged that the goal was to cause “the most deaths in U.S. history…we’re hoping. We’re hoping.”

“Directors will be fighting over this story,” Mr. Klebold said in a video made before the massacre.
