The "lips that touch liquor" photo

Comment / Question: I know about the Women's Christian Temperance movement and the song. But I have a question about the top photo. I've seen this many times (you can Google it and it is all over the place). A friend sent it to me recently. The question is this .... is this a joke? Or were these real women that stood against liquor? I ask because the women are all .... how do I put this nicely .... not real kissable looking! Thoughts?

  1. Lack of smiles was characteristic of photography until about 1930, when film speeds got good enough to allow a good picture of a smile--prior to that, a smile tended to blur in the shutter.

On the other hand, it's a movie backdrop, and the National Park Service has the image in its gallery at the Edison National Monument, claiming it's from a 1930 or so short film spoofing Prohibition. The attire is also quite different from that worn in 1874, and....how to say this nicely....some of those faces are not only unkissable, but ....not exactly female looking, either.
