Whole blood donation

After a couple of bad experiences with the apheresis donation (multiple pokes, an hour to give, etc), today I went back to the whole blood donation. Blood started flowing at 11:26 and I was done in 8 minutes flat.

  2. I try to give blood regularly and have done the apheresis a couple of times. I'm not especially keen on it as the tingling gets to be unnerving (why don't they warm the returning blood?), it does take longer, still wondering about safety (going out seems safer than coming back in) and it increases the time between donations.

That said, they seem to prefer to get the red blood over the whole blood so it is hard to say no when they ask. One of the last techs to draw blood from me is an Iraq war vet (and really good with the needle), so, pondering the civic virtue of donating blood and the sacrifice involved, a little extra time seems paltry in comparison to what others have done.
