Chrysler Sale Unavoidable, Zetsche Says

Excerpt:

But by last fall, when Chrysler’s sales deteriorated and the carmaker tumbled into losses, he said it was starting to become clear that there was no longer a case for keeping Daimler and Chrysler together. The American auto market was simply too volatile, and the scope for synergies between the Mercedes division of Daimler and Chrysler, which Mr. Zetsche had made an urgent priority when he took the helm of DaimlerChrysler in January 2006, were proving to be disappointing.

Comments: I was skeptical in '98 about this acquisition. In summary: "[the] synergies ... prov[ed] ... disappointing". Chrysler dragged Daimler down and Daimler couldn't lift Chrysler up. For the sake of the workers, retirees, the suppliers, and the customers, I hope Chrysler survives. It's doubtful in my view!
