National Geographic taps curious squirrel for glossy treatment
Excerpt:
The world's most famous squirrel is National Geographic's choice for a prominent photo position in an upcoming issue of the famed magazine, according to the Minnesota husband and wife who stumbled into global Internet fame with the self-portrait vacation snapshot.
Melissa Brandts, who along with her husband, Jackson, snapped a spontaneous photo of a squirrel ambling in front of their lens in Banff National Park in Canada, says the picture is the editor's pick for publication in the November issue.
During August, the photo was among the magazine's online "Your Shot" offerings, which allowed visitors to rate the submitted photos. All through the month, the Watertown couple's squirrel picture was the clear favorite.
Not only did the photo become an instant favorite among visitors to the magazine's website, but it also held for a time the No. 1 search response spot on Google for "squirrel" and has been given viral cut-and-paste treatment into various other photo scenes thanks to a website set up just for the camera-curious creature
